Cliff Bailey is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Science in the College of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University. He was formerly Reader and Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology, and Lecturer in Physiology at the university.
His research group studies the regulation of nutrient metabolism, the pathogenesis of diabetes and obesity, and the development of new therapies, with specific interests including pathogenesis and interventional approaches against insulin resistance, and islet transplantation and therapeutic use of genetically modified insulin-releasing cells.
He is a member of multiple professional organisations, including the British Endocrine Society and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).
In 2021, he was named as a world expert in type 2 diabetes by Expertscape, based on his research publications over the past ten years. He contributed to the development of metformin and he and his colleagues have also been involved in the development of SGLT-2 inhibitors.
Professor Bailey has served on the committees of Diabetes UK, the Society for Endocrinology and the EASD. He has also held several editorial positions and is currently senior editor of DVDRes.
He has been an expert witness for drug licensing authorities, regulatory agencies and other national and international review bodies, and he has published over 400 research papers and reviews.
