Eberhard Standl is a retired director of the Munich Diabetes Research Group e.V. at the Helmholtz Centre and Professor of Medicine, specialising in endocrinology and angiology.

He was previously director of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism at the Academic Hospital Munich Schwabing. He also worked at the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center in the USA and presently serves as a Vice-President of the Study Group “Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease” as well as an associate editor of “Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice”.

Professor Standl has also served as President of the German Diabetes Association, the German Diabetes Union and the International Diabetes Federation Europe, as well as as vice president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

His principal areas of research include diabetology, the action and degradation of insulin (especially clinical application of human insulin) and the pathogenesis and epidemiology of cardiovascular diabetic complications. He held leadership functions in a number of cardiovascular outcome trials.

He has published over 666 original papers, review articles, textbook chapters and monographs, and received several scientific awards, including the Bertram Award of the German Diabetes Association for research related to vascular disease in diabetes in 1981, the EASD’s Castelli-Pedroli Prize in 1999, the Harold Rifkin Award of the American Diabetes Association in 2005, the Albert Renold Medal of EASD 2006, and the Hellmut Mehnert Award 2013.
