Tsvetalina Tankova is Professor of Endocrinology, Chair in Endocrinology and Vice Rector at the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria. She is also Head of the Department of Diabetology at the University Hospital of Endocrinology in Sofia.

She graduated from the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria, where she obtained her PhD and DMedSc degree, as well as a specialist degree in internal medicine and endocrinology. She has a Master’s degree in public health and healthcare management. She was trained at the WHO Collaborating Center, University Hospital, Geneva; Switzerland; King’s College Hospital, London, UK, and the Steno Diabetes Center, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Professor Tankova is author and co-author of over 260 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals like Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism, Nutrients, etc. She is co-author in the recent ADA/EASD Consensus report on the management of hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes, 2022. She has over 460 presentations at national and international congresses and symposia.

Professor Tankova has been a principal investigator in over 40 university-funded research projects and international clinical trials in diabetes.

She teaches medical students in endocrinology and postgraduate students in diabetes. She received the Best Teacher award of the Faculty of Medicine in 2017. She is involved in multiple postgraduate courses in practical diabetology and diabetes research. She is an invited speaker at EASD postgraduate training courses in many countries. She has supervised many PhD theses and postgraduate students.

Professor Tankova chairs the Examination committee for the state exam for specialist degree in endocrinology.

She is a member of a range of national and international committees. She is Chair of the Expert Council on Endocrinology at the Bulgarian Ministry of Health, and is a member of the Guidelines Oversight Committee at the EASD.

She is a member of many societies and associations and has been Secretary of the Bulgarian Society of Endocrinology since 2003.

She serves as Editorial Board member and reviewer at a number of national and international journals in the field of diabetes and metabolism.

Professor Tankova is the recipient of many awards, including the prestigious Pythagoras Prize of the Ministry of Education and Science, and the National Medical Award 2020.

Her clinical areas of interest include diabetes, prediabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome. Her research activity is focused on risk factors and prevention of type 2 diabetes, complications in prediabetes, glucose variability in prediabetes, cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction in prediabetes and diabetes, diabetic polyneuropathy, vitamin D in diabetic neuropathy and diabetic foot, metabolic disturbances in type 1 diabetes, monogenic diabetes, novel glucose-lowering agents.

Duality of Interest: Professor Tankova has received speaker’s fees/honoraria from Novo Nordisk, Boehringer Ingelheim, Astra Zeneca, Eli Lilly and has also received payments for membership of boards/advisory panels from Boehringer Ingelheim, Novo Nordisk, Astra Zeneca, Eli Lilly.
